Since 2015, Christ Church Dore has been working with the Church of England's fifth mark of mission mind - "To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth."
In 2022, we achieved a Silver Award in the Eco Church scheme administered by A Rocha UK. The award is for how we express care for God's world in the following areas:
Worship and teaching
Buildings and energy use
Land and nature
Community and global engagement
Lifestyle
We have two eco-champions, Anita Campbell and Angela Clarke, along with a group of people who care for the churchyard and a committee which cares for the fabric of our church building. These are the people who are helping move us from Silver Award to Gold.
A major re-ordering of the church in 2024/25 both helped and hindered us in this. The re-ordering necessitated some of the churchyard to be closed off and people did not visit the site as often. The re-ordering has changed our heating from and old inefficient gas boiler and radiators with little control to modern under floor heating. This should reduce our carbon footprint and costs significantly. Christ Church is now back in the church building and fully back on track to work with partners and the community to achieve the Gold Award.
With Gold in mind, we want your ideas and feedback! If you want to join this effort (you do not need to attend church or have any faith), get in touch with fabric@dorechurch.org.uk.
We are a Fairtrade Church!
We were first given this mark in 2005 and have been consistent in our promotion of Fairtrade goods throughout our church. In 2024, we recommitted ourselves to this. We aspire to develop more links and have more events where Fairtrade is promoted.
